Middendorfs! Duh!

Ok, so you've herd, right? Middendorfs "razor thin" sliced catfish? right der off 55 in Manchac? Well you need to taste. As part of the Birthday Dinner Posse, we rolled out to D'orfs last Sunday for Mikals birthday and had a feast. and after trying pretty much about everything worth anything on the menu, i have to say that their hush puppies are more famous to me than the catfish. Yes, the fish are great, the batter is great, they are thin..but the amount of flavor and style points you get w/ these little puppies are by far better than any seafood add-on ive ever had...sorry Cock-of-the-Walk (RIP).

Original Post = Original Art

....can ya keep up? i know, i just picked up the pace.

Jazz Fest Press Conference

The 40th Annual New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival is on y'all. I am honored to have been hired by the Fest as one of their staff photographers for this years historic festival. I have shot it the last 5 years for my good peoples'over at SF's Jambase.com, and was going to take a break this year and do portraits when i got the call. Needless to say i am stoked, very stoked.

I attended yesterdays official press day for the unveiling of the posters, some announcements, and some music by some folks you may have heard of...Allen Toussaint, Troy Andrews, Renard Poche, and Herman Ernest. They wrote some new music to commemorate the 40th Anniversary, and pretty much killed it in the paddock. It smelled like fest, sounded like fest. I guess it is...

APOSTA DEI

So i'm going to put up a post erry day. I do some interesting things sometimes.

Last week was insane - Austin, SXSW, BACK FOR 4 shoots in 3 days.

SXSW was insane, (again) - got there late Tuesday night, slept on a floor college style, surrounded by dried pizza crusts, coke cans, and stale beer smell. Reminded me of my days on GSRI @ LSU, living downwind of the poo poo plant. And living w/ Kyle Nash for good measure.

Rotary gigged that night at the so-called PASTE magazine showcase, where there was no signs, no magazines, or no rep's from the magazine. Great job guys. But we had 50 or so folks there, good nola cats and some bay area friends.

The next day i played percussion with White Bitch at Noon, then Rotary had a 3pm gig, then a 6pm gig. i ate some BBQ and hit the wall. Slept for 12 hours, and flew back to NOLA w/ Chris.

Friday night when i got back to nola, i was dropped off at the CAC to shoot the heralded Master of Laptop Electro Music - Carl Stone.

...and yes, that was him, for an hour. at the computer. If i was on some drugs it would have been a great show. i would have picked mushrooms. But i couldnt' stay, i was off to the Dirty Coast Fashion show to photograph models wearing nothing but DC gear...cut up, falling off, and damn sexy.

The next day, SAT, was two weddings back to back - from 10am - 10pm - and after that i was beat down fo sho.

Sunday was chillin at Chaz n Claires bebe shower. Yeah, i guess we're getting older, going to baby showers, weddings and the such. im getting older too, but not goin there yet.

Austin NOW!

Just woke up in Austin, don't know how i got here. No, i do. Cory and i left NO at 7ish, stopped in Laffy-ette to pick up percussion from Tiffany, get coffee, greenery, and hit the road. checked out the new Caddywompus EP called "EP's" and Mike Gambles "Scrambler Sequill" - will these bands get together already?

Damn, please go see Caddywompus...their music is fresh, live, and full of reckless abandon. go, now.

Ash Wednesday 2009

I decided to get out of town, touch the end of the road. the beginning of the Gulf, the sticky air, and crawfish heads abound. Hw1 for fun, Hw1 for reset.

mardi gras was and is and shall forever be the purge, and Ash Wednesday is the reformation. I feel good about this year, i said this last year, and i was right.

Snooks Eaglin 2nd Line Funeral

2 greats in 2 days...has this happened before? Two New Orleans icons, having their 2nd line funerals back to back. Well, if you live in New Orleans, it is not to surprising considering the giants of the music scene that have passed only in the recent year. The days are rolling along, time is taking our masters and our teachers: our inspiration. I am here for only a few reasons, and they all have to do with the LIVING HISTORY of this city...it is passed down, its breathed, its sounds are ricocheted from Treme homes and sent to my ears ..which then moves my feet.

Fird "Snooks" Eaglin passed on February 14th, 2008. He was one of those living cultural icons, that would amaze you and astonish you at what talent he had.

here's an idea:

always teaching, always jokin...but a truly a talent.

Here are some images from his VERY traditional 2nd line funeral. I did some audio interviews that i will release shortly when i finish editing them

Antoinette K-Doe 2nd Line

These images are a few of the many images i shot at Antoinette's 2nd Line Jazz Funeral. It was an amazing day, a true, honest, jubilant send off for one of New Orleans' ambassadors of culture, Antoinette K-Doe. The streets were packed: Skull and Bones, Baby Dolls, Camel Toes, Indian Tribes, Brass Bands, and even Ernie. The widow of N.O. legend Ernie K-doe (Mother-in-Law, Here Come the Girls) - worked tirelessly at keeping Ernie's legacy of music and love for his city alive, as well as keeping the tradition of female walking crews in check and vibrant. She was a founding member of the Baby Dolls, and also worked closely and mentored the Camel Toe Lady Steppers. Her club, The Mother-in-Law Lounge on Claiborne Ave, still stands as a bar, museum, and cultural institute. Visit often, drink plenty, but always remember Antoinette as the ambassador.
